1. India Removes Export Restrictions on Wheat and Wheat Products

India made a major agricultural-trade policy change on 24 August 2026, shifting specified wheat, durum wheat and wheat-flour products from the export category “Prohibited” to “Free” with immediate effect.

Two DGFT notifications cover specified wheat categories and wheat flour or related products such as atta, maida, semolina/rava and wholemeal flour.

Why is this important?

India had restricted wheat exports during the global food-price shock beginning in 2022 to protect domestic availability and control inflation.

The latest decision demonstrates the difficult balance between:

Food security → Consumer prices → Farmer income → Buffer stocks → Agricultural exports

When domestic stocks are comfortable, exports can provide better market opportunities to farmers and earn foreign exchange. However, excessive exports during periods of shortage can put pressure on domestic food prices.

Important Prelims Points

  • DGFT: Directorate General of Foreign Trade
  • Ministry: Ministry of Commerce & Industry
  • Export policy categories can include Free, Restricted and Prohibited
  • Foreign trade is governed mainly through the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 and Foreign Trade Policy.

Mains Insight

India needs a predictable and data-driven agricultural export policy rather than frequent export bans and reversals. Decisions should consider production, procurement, inflation, buffer stocks and global prices.

2. 27th India–Russia IRIGC-TEC Meeting Held in Moscow

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar participated in the 27th India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation — IRIGC-TEC in Moscow.

During the visit, he also met Russian President Vladimir Putin. Jaishankar highlighted the significant expansion of bilateral economic cooperation.

What is IRIGC-TEC?

IRIGC-TEC is one of the principal institutional mechanisms for India–Russia cooperation in:

  • trade,
  • economy,
  • science,
  • technology,
  • energy,
  • industry and
  • cultural relations.

India–Russia cooperation today extends far beyond traditional defence ties.

Important Areas

Energy: oil, gas and nuclear cooperation
Fertilisers: important for Indian agriculture
Defence: long-standing strategic partnership
Technology: science, industrial and high-technology cooperation
Trade: expanding bilateral commerce

Why does it matter for India?

India has to maintain relations with Russia while simultaneously deepening ties with the United States, EU, Japan and Indo-Pacific partners.

This is a practical example of:

Strategic autonomy and multi-alignment in Indian foreign policy.

3. India Releases Service Producer Price Indices for Q1 FY 2026-27

The Government released provisional Service Producer Price Indices (Service PPIs) for Q1 of FY 2026-27 on 24 August.

The new framework uses 2022-23 as the base year and currently covers seven broad service categories.

The most striking movement was in Air Passenger Services, whose index reached 126.4, representing 31.94% year-on-year inflation.

Pension-fund management services rose 5.20%, while the Banking Service Price Index declined 3.35%.

Services Currently Covered

  • Securities transactions
  • Banking
  • Pension-fund management
  • Insurance
  • Telecom
  • Railways
  • Air passenger services

PPI vs CPI vs WPI

IndexMeasures
CPIPrices paid by consumers
WPIWholesale-level price changes in goods
PPIPrices received by producers
Service PPIProducer-level price movements in services

Why is this important?

Services contribute a major share of India's economy, but traditional inflation measures have not captured producer-side service prices adequately.

The Service PPI therefore strengthens India's economic-statistics framework.

4. India Calls for Stronger Land-Restoration Finance at UNCCD COP17

At UNCCD COP17 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, India participated in the high-level Ministerial Dialogue on Innovative Financial Mechanisms for Healthy Land and Drought Resilience on 24 August.

India called for more:

diversified + adequate + predictable + sustained finance

for land restoration and drought resilience.

India also highlighted its land-restoration achievements: official updates state that 21.76 million hectares were restored during 2011–2020, generating around 1.22 billion person-days of employment.

Why does land-restoration finance matter?

Land degradation affects:

  • agricultural productivity,
  • food security,
  • groundwater recharge,
  • biodiversity,
  • rural livelihoods,
  • drought vulnerability and
  • climate resilience.

Therefore land degradation is not just an environmental issue; it is also an economic and development challenge.

Remember the Three Rio Conventions

ConventionMain Focus
UNFCCCClimate Change
CBDBiodiversity
UNCCDDesertification, land degradation and drought

Mains Insight

Environmental commitments increasingly require financial architecture, not just targets. Restoration goals will remain weak unless public finance, MDBs and private capital are mobilised at scale.

5. Medical Devices Rules Reforms Proposed

The Union Health Ministry on 24 August announced fresh proposed reforms relating to the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.

The proposals focus on three important areas:

  1. simplifying outsourced sterilisation requirements,
  2. introducing uniform testing fees, and
  3. recognising the European Union among specified regulatory jurisdictions for eligible clinical-investigation waivers.

Important clarification

This should be described as a regulatory reform proposal/update, not as a blanket statement that the entire Medical Devices Rules have been replaced.

Why is it important?

India is trying to balance:

Ease of Doing Business + faster access to medical technology + patient safety + quality regulation.

Prelims Connection

Medical devices in India are regulated under the Medical Devices Rules, 2017, within the wider framework of the Drugs and Cosmetics law.

Devices are classified broadly according to risk categories.

6. India Launches First Non-GMO High-Expansion Popcorn Maize Hybrid

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan launched India's first non-GMO high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed at Musunuru in Andhra Pradesh on 24 August.

The indigenous hybrid has been presented as an effort to reduce dependence on imported popcorn-maize hybrid technology.

More than 17,500 farmers across eight States, cultivating nearly 40,000 acres, are associated with the enterprise ecosystem highlighted during the launch.

Hybrid ≠ GMO

This is an important Prelims distinction.

Hybrid

Created by crossing selected parent varieties to combine desirable traits.

GMO

Created through direct genetic modification using biotechnology techniques.

Therefore:

A hybrid seed can be completely non-GMO.

What does “high-expansion” mean?

In popcorn, expansion refers to how much the kernel increases in volume after popping.

Higher expansion improves commercial quality.

Why does it matter?

  • indigenous seed technology,
  • value-added agriculture,
  • farmer income,
  • food processing,
  • import substitution,
  • agricultural entrepreneurship.

7. India–Cambodia Trade and Investment Working Group Meets in Phnom Penh

The 3rd India–Cambodia Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment (JWGTI) was held in Phnom Penh on 24 August.

Bilateral trade grew by more than 36% to $406.78 million in FY 2025-26, compared with $299 million the previous year.

Discussions included:

  • pharmaceuticals,
  • agriculture,
  • customs cooperation,
  • banking and insurance,
  • investment,
  • e-governance,
  • traditional medicine and
  • digital payments.

The two countries also reviewed the next stage of the UPI–KHQR cross-border payments linkage.

Why is Cambodia important?

Cambodia is:

  • a member of ASEAN,
  • part of the Mekong region,
  • relevant to India's Act East Policy, and
  • strategically located in Southeast Asia.

Prelims Facts

Capital: Phnom Penh
Currency: Cambodian Riel
Major river: Mekong
Grouping: ASEAN

8. India–Japan Business Engagement Deepens in Tokyo

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal began major business engagements in Japan on 24 August while leading India's largest-ever business delegation to the country, comprising more than 200 representatives.

He addressed the Keidanren — Japan Business Federation, whose membership includes more than 1,500 major Japanese companies.

Key areas include:

semiconductors + clean energy + manufacturing + automobiles + steel + healthcare + startups + supply-chain resilience.

Why is Japan strategically important?

India–Japan relations combine:

  • economic security,
  • infrastructure,
  • investment,
  • technology,
  • Indo-Pacific cooperation,
  • supply-chain resilience, and
  • clean-energy transition.

Japan is also a major investor in Indian infrastructure and manufacturing.

Mains Connection

India–Japan economic cooperation increasingly shows how economic policy and strategic policy are converging in the Indo-Pacific.

International Current Affairs

9. US Threatens 50% Tariffs on Autos and Steel Amid Canada Trade Dispute

US President Donald Trump announced on 24 August that tariffs on cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel would rise to 50% from 1 January 2027, after trade negotiations with Canada broke down.

The measure remains a future tariff threat rather than an immediate August implementation, an important distinction for current-affairs accuracy.

Why is it significant?

US and Canadian manufacturing supply chains are deeply integrated, particularly in automobiles.

High tariffs could:

  • disrupt North American value chains,
  • raise production costs,
  • trigger retaliation,
  • affect investment decisions and
  • weaken regional trade integration.

India Impact

Global firms facing tariff uncertainty may seek diversified production locations.

That can strengthen India's opportunity under:

China+1 + friend-shoring + supply-chain diversification

but may also increase global protectionism and trade uncertainty.

10. EU Approves €6.1 Billion for Ukraine’s Defence

The European Union approved a further €6.1 billion for Ukraine's defence on 24 August.

The package is intended to support procurement including:

  • air and missile defence,
  • missiles,
  • ammunition and
  • radar systems.

Why is this important?

The Russia–Ukraine war has accelerated major changes in European security policy.

Europe is:

  • increasing defence expenditure,
  • expanding arms production,
  • strengthening air defence,
  • debating strategic autonomy, and
  • deepening military support to Ukraine.

India Connection
