Geography NCERT Guide for UPSC CSE 2027

Class 6–12 roadmap for Physical, Indian and Human Geography — with map practice, Must Read priorities, Prelims traps and Mains diagrams.

Current-edition note: NCERT is transitioning middle-school Social Science under the new curriculum framework. For Classes 6–8, follow the geography/environment portions of the latest official Social Science books. For Classes IX–XII, use the current official Geography titles on the NCERT portal.

What Geography NCERTs Should Do for You

Geography NCERTs should give you three things: a mental map of India and the world, conceptual clarity about physical processes, and the ability to connect population, resources, agriculture and industry with location. For UPSC, map practice must run alongside reading.

MUST BUILD

Physical Processes

Plate tectonics, landforms, atmosphere, oceans, climate, soils and natural vegetation.

MUST BUILD

India Map Sense

Rivers, mountains, passes, plateaus, coasts, soils, resources, crops, industries and transport corridors.

MUST BUILD

Human Linkages

Population, settlements, migration, agriculture, industry, transport, trade and regional development.

Class-wise Priority

ClassBook / FocusPriorityUPSC Use
6–8Geography and environment portions of current Social Science booksFoundationMaps, landforms, resources, climate, human-environment basics
9Contemporary India–IHighIndia size/location, physiography, drainage, climate, vegetation, population
10Contemporary India–IIVery HighResources, agriculture, minerals, manufacturing, transport and lifelines
11Fundamentals of Physical GeographyVery HighCore physical geography for Prelims + GS-I
11India: Physical EnvironmentVery HighIndian physiography, drainage, climate, vegetation, hazards
12Fundamentals of Human GeographyHighPopulation, activities, settlements, transport, trade
12India: People and EconomyVery HighPopulation, resources, agriculture, industry, planning, transport

Class 6–8: Read for Map Familiarity

  • Globe, latitudes/longitudes and basic map reading.
  • Major landforms and water bodies.
  • Weather, climate and vegetation basics.
  • Resources and conservation.
  • Agriculture, industries and human settlements.
  • India and world map orientation.
Rule: Never make long notes from Classes 6–8 Geography. Mark maps and build a glossary.

Class 9: Contemporary India–I

ThemePriorityExtract
India — Size and LocationMust ReadLatitudinal/longitudinal extent, neighbours, strategic location
Physical Features of IndiaMust ReadPhysiographic divisions, tectonic origin, map locations
DrainageMust ReadRiver systems, drainage patterns, lakes and basin logic
ClimateMust ReadMonsoon mechanism, seasons, rainfall distribution
Natural Vegetation & WildlifeHighVegetation types, climatic controls, conservation linkages
PopulationHighDistribution, density, growth and composition

Class 10: Contemporary India–II

ThemePriorityUPSC Focus
Resources and DevelopmentMust ReadResource planning, land use, soils, degradation, conservation
Forest and Wildlife ResourcesHighBiodiversity, conservation categories and community role
Water ResourcesMust ReadMultipurpose projects, water stress, rainwater harvesting
AgricultureMust ReadCropping patterns, major crops, irrigation, reforms
Minerals and Energy ResourcesMust ReadDistribution, conventional/non-conventional energy, map work
Manufacturing IndustriesMust ReadLocation factors, industrial regions, pollution
Lifelines of National EconomyHighTransport, communication and trade networks

Class 11: Fundamentals of Physical Geography

This is the single most important NCERT for physical geography. Read it slowly and draw diagrams.

MUST READ

Geomorphology

Earth interior, rocks, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanism, weathering and landforms.

MUST READ

Climatology

Atmosphere, insolation, heat budget, pressure, winds, precipitation and climate.

MUST READ

Oceanography

Ocean-floor relief, temperature, salinity, waves, tides and currents.

Class 11: India — Physical Environment

  • India's structure and physiography.
  • Drainage systems and river basins.
  • Indian monsoon and climatic variability.
  • Natural vegetation and soil distribution.
  • Natural hazards and disasters where covered.
Prelims Focus: Pair every chapter with atlas practice. A concept without location knowledge is incomplete for UPSC.

Class 12: Fundamentals of Human Geography

  • Human geography: nature and scope.
  • Population distribution, density, growth and composition.
  • Human development.
  • Primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary activities.
  • Transport, communication and international trade.
  • Human settlements.

Class 12: India — People and Economy

  • Population distribution, migration and settlements.
  • Land resources, agriculture and water resources.
  • Mineral and energy resources.
  • Manufacturing industries.
  • Planning and sustainable development.
  • Transport, communication and trade.
  • Geographical perspective on selected issues and problems.

Prelims: What to Revise

  • Locations and map-based facts.
  • Physical geography processes.
  • River systems, soils, vegetation and climate.
  • Crop-resource-industry distributions.
  • Ocean currents, winds and climatic phenomena.
  • Statements linking a process to the wrong region or condition.

Mains: What to Carry into Answers

  • Small labelled diagrams.
  • India/world outline maps.
  • Cause-process-impact chains.
  • Regional examples.
  • Human-environment interaction.
  • Development versus sustainability balance.

Where NCERT Ends

After NCERT, shift to atlas practice, PYQs and one standard source for advanced physical geography or Indian geography where required. Current affairs should update static facts such as infrastructure, disasters, climate events and resource patterns.
