Science & Environment NCERT Guide for UPSC CSE 2027

A selective Class 6–12 science roadmap focused on Biology, ecology, everyday science and concepts that improve UPSC Prelims elimination.

Current-edition note: NCERT is rolling out revised textbooks in lower grades. For Classes 6–8, use the latest official Science book available for your grade. For UPSC, the goal is topic mastery — not memorising a legacy chapter list.

What Science NCERTs Should Do for UPSC

Science NCERT is mainly a conceptual base for Prelims. It should help you reason through unfamiliar statements in biology, ecology, physics, chemistry and everyday science. For Science & Tech current affairs, NCERT alone is never enough.

HIGH VALUE

Biology

Cells, human systems, reproduction, heredity, disease, ecology and biodiversity.

HIGH VALUE

Environment

Ecosystems, food chains, natural resources, pollution and conservation.

SELECTIVE

Physics & Chemistry

Energy, electricity, light, materials, atoms, reactions and everyday scientific principles.

Class-wise Priority

ClassFocusPriorityUPSC Use
6–8Current official Science booksFoundationEveryday science, ecology, materials, basic biology and physics
9ScienceHighCells, tissues, diversity, disease, natural resources, matter
10ScienceVery HighLife processes, heredity, environment, energy, electricity, chemistry basics
11–12 BiologySelective ecology, genetics, biotechnology, human biologySelective HighEnvironment + biotech + health current affairs foundation
11–12 Physics/ChemistryOnly topic-driven selective readingLow/SelectiveWhen a current S&T topic requires deeper basics

Class 6–8: Read Selectively but Properly

  • Food and nutrition.
  • Plants and animals.
  • Microorganisms.
  • Materials, metals/non-metals and basic chemical change.
  • Coal, petroleum and energy.
  • Water, forests and conservation.
  • Weather, climate and adaptation.
  • Cells and reproduction where covered.
  • Force, light, electricity and natural phenomena.
  • Pollution and waste.
Rule: If a chapter has no clear UPSC relevance, understand it once and move on. Science NCERT should not consume the time meant for core GS subjects.

Class 9 Science: High-Value Themes

ThemePriorityWhy Useful
Cell and TissuesMust ReadBiology fundamentals
Diversity in Living OrganismsHighClassification logic and biodiversity base
Why Do We Fall Ill?Must ReadDisease, immunity and public-health basics
Natural ResourcesMust ReadCycles, atmosphere, water and ecosystem links
Matter / Atoms / Structure of AtomSelectiveBasic chemistry for materials and S&T
Motion / Gravitation / Work & Energy / SoundSelectiveConceptual physics and everyday applications

Class 10 Science: Highest-Value School Science

  • Chemical reactions and basic chemistry.
  • Metals and non-metals.
  • Carbon and its compounds.
  • Life processes.
  • Control and coordination.
  • Reproduction.
  • Heredity and evolution.
  • Light and the human eye.
  • Electricity and magnetic effects.
  • Sources of energy.
  • Our environment and natural-resource management.
Prelims Focus: Understand mechanisms. UPSC can place a familiar concept in a new context; rote definitions will not help if the statement is reworded.

Class 11–12 Biology: Selective UPSC Reading

Use senior-secondary Biology only where it adds clear UPSC value. High-value areas include:

  • Cell biology and biomolecules — selective basics.
  • Human physiology and health — selective.
  • Genetics and inheritance.
  • Evolution.
  • Microbes and human welfare.
  • Biotechnology principles/applications.
  • Organisms and populations.
  • Ecosystem.
  • Biodiversity and conservation.
Edition caution: Senior-secondary chapter availability may be rationalised. Use the latest official NCERT edition and map by topic rather than relying on an old coaching chapter number.
