What Is a Spacewalk?
A spacewalk is technically known as:
Extravehicular Activity — EVA
An EVA occurs when an astronaut leaves the protected environment of a spacecraft or space station and performs activities in outer space.
Astronauts may conduct EVAs for:
- repairing spacecraft;
- installing equipment;
- replacing damaged components;
- conducting scientific experiments;
- maintaining solar arrays;
- upgrading communication systems;
- preparing infrastructure for future missions.
Spacewalking is one of the most technically demanding operations in human spaceflight.
Why Are Spacewalks Difficult?
Outside a spacecraft, astronauts face an extremely hostile environment.
Major challenges include:
Vacuum
Space contains virtually no atmospheric pressure.
Astronauts therefore require pressurised spacesuits.
Extreme Temperature
Objects exposed to sunlight and shadow can experience very large temperature variations.
Radiation
Earth's atmosphere normally protects humans from much of the harmful radiation encountered in space.
Microgravity
Astronauts can float away from the spacecraft unless properly secured.
Limited Life Support
A spacesuit must independently provide:
- oxygen;
- carbon-dioxide removal;
- temperature regulation;
- communication;
- pressure;
- drinking water;
- protection against micrometeoroids.
Therefore, an EVA spacesuit effectively functions as a:
Miniature personal spacecraft.
What Was U.S. Spacewalk 97?
Sophie Adenot's historic EVA was designated:
U.S. EVA-97
She conducted it with NASA astronaut Anil Menon.
The two astronauts switched their suits to battery power at 14:29 CEST, officially beginning the spacewalk.
They exited through the Quest Joint Airlock of the International Space Station.
Their main objective was to replace a malfunctioning:
Space-to-Ground Antenna — SGANT-2
The antenna had been unable to properly track NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) constellation since November 2025.
What Is the Space-to-Ground Antenna?
The International Space Station continuously exchanges huge volumes of information with Earth.
This includes:
- scientific data;
- voice communications;
- telemetry;
- video;
- operational commands;
- spacecraft-health information.
The Space-to-Ground antenna helps provide high-data-rate communications between the ISS and ground control.
It communicates through NASA's network of:
Tracking and Data Relay Satellites — TDRS
A simplified communication chain is:

Ground Station / Mission Control
This system allows astronauts and scientists aboard the station to remain continuously connected with Earth.
What Happened During the Spacewalk?
The astronauts initially planned to remove the faulty antenna and install a replacement.
However, the operation proved more difficult than expected.
They encountered:
- stuck bolts;
- difficult electrical connectors;
- additional mechanical resistance.
As a result, they successfully removed the faulty antenna but did not have enough time to install the replacement.
Instead, the old antenna was securely tied down to the ISS truss structure.
The replacement operation is planned to continue during another EVA.
The spacewalk became the 282nd EVA conducted in support of ISS assembly, maintenance and upgrades.
Sophie Adenot's Second Spacewalk
Sophie Adenot and Anil Menon are scheduled to conduct another spacewalk on 25 August 2026.
The planned U.S. EVA-98 will attempt to complete installation of the replacement Space-to-Ground antenna.
If time permits, the astronauts are also expected to work on a retroreflector on the Harmony module, which helps provide navigation information for visiting spacecraft.
Important Current-Affairs Note
As of 22 August 2026, this second EVA is scheduled but has not yet occurred.
For UPSC preparation, students should distinguish completed events from planned missions.
