1. ISRO Successfully Launches EOS-05 aboard GSLV-F17
Why in News?
ISRO successfully launched EOS-05 aboard GSLV-F17 at 2:55 AM IST on 4 September 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
The satellite was placed into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit.
EOS-05 is especially important because ISRO describes it as India’s first-ever imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit.
Why does it matter?
Most Earth-observation satellites operate in low-Earth or sun-synchronous orbits. They provide detailed images but revisit the same location only when their orbit brings them back over it.
A geosynchronous imaging satellite can observe a broad region much more frequently.
This can improve:
- disaster monitoring,
- agriculture assessment,
- forest and land-use monitoring,
- weather-related observation,
- water-resource management, and
- strategic surveillance.
EOS-05 therefore adds an important temporal dimension to India’s Earth-observation capability.
GSLV-F17
GSLV-F17 was the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. ISRO’s launch record confirms that the mission took place on 4 September 2026.
Geosynchronous vs Geostationary
This distinction is important for Prelims.
A geosynchronous satellite has an orbital period approximately equal to Earth’s rotation period.
A geostationary satellite is a special type of geosynchronous satellite whose orbit is:
- circular,
- above the equator,
- in the same direction as Earth’s rotation.
It therefore appears stationary to an observer on Earth.
Every geostationary orbit is geosynchronous, but every geosynchronous orbit is not geostationary.
Prelims Focus
- EOS-05: Earth Observation Satellite
- Launch vehicle: GSLV-F17
- Launch date: 4 September 2026
- Launch site: Sriharikota
- Initial orbit: Sub-GTO
- Special feature: India’s first imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit
- GSLV-F17: 19th GSLV flight
Mains Link
GS-III: Space technology, disaster management, remote sensing and strategic technology.
India’s future Earth-observation architecture will increasingly depend on combining satellites in different orbits rather than relying on one type of platform alone.
2. NAMASTE Cards Distributed to Waste Pickers
Why in News?
On 4 September 2026, the Government inaugurated distribution of NAMASTE Cards to waste pickers in the MCD Najafgarh Zone of Delhi.
Eligible beneficiaries were also provided Ayushman Cards.
The programme seeks to formally recognise waste pickers and connect them with safety measures, healthcare and social-security benefits.
What is NAMASTE?
NAMASTE = National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem
It is a Central Sector Scheme jointly implemented by:
- Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, and
- Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
It originally focused strongly on Sewer and Septic Tank Workers, while waste pickers were subsequently brought within its target groups.
Why are NAMASTE Cards important?
A major problem faced by informal workers is lack of formal recognition.
Without identification, workers may remain outside:
- health insurance,
- occupational-safety programmes,
- PPE distribution,
- skill development,
- livelihood assistance and
- government welfare schemes.
NAMASTE attempts to move sanitation work towards:
Identification → Protection → Mechanisation → Healthcare → Skills → Dignity
Waste Pickers and Circular Economy
Waste pickers perform a major environmental service by recovering:
- plastic,
- paper,
- metals,
- glass and
- other recyclable materials.
This reduces landfill pressure and brings materials back into production.
They therefore occupy an important place in the circular economy, even though much of their work takes place in the informal sector.
Formalisation should bring them into municipal waste-management systems without destroying their existing livelihoods.
Link with Manual Scavenging
Do not confuse all sanitation workers with manual scavengers.
The relevant law is:
Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013
NAMASTE aims to reduce hazardous human entry into sanitation systems by promoting mechanised cleaning, PPE, training and safer working conditions.
Constitutional Link
- Article 14: Equality
- Article 17: Abolition of untouchability
- Article 21: Life with dignity
- Article 23: Prohibition of forced labour
- Article 42: Just and humane conditions of work
Prelims Focus
- NAMASTE is a Central Sector Scheme
- Full form: National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem
- Target groups include Sewer and Septic Tank Workers and waste pickers
- Implemented jointly by MoSJE and MoHUA
- Focus: safety, mechanisation, healthcare and livelihood security
Mains Link
NAMASTE illustrates an important principle of urban governance:
A city cannot be called clean if cleanliness depends on unsafe and undignified labour.

3. India and France Deepen Cooperation in Space Technology
Why in News?
On 4 September 2026, Union Space Minister Dr Jitendra Singh and French Minister for Higher Education, Research and Space Philippe Baptiste held a bilateral virtual meeting.
The two sides agreed to deepen cooperation in:
- human spaceflight,
- advanced space technologies,
- cooperation between ISRO and French institutions, and
- greater industry participation.
The discussions also covered France’s participation in the Bengaluru Space Expo and the upcoming International Space Summit.
India-France Space Partnership
India and France have one of India’s oldest space partnerships.
Cooperation between the two countries dates back to the 1960s and is primarily conducted through:
ISRO ↔ CNES
CNES is the French national space agency.
Important Joint Missions
Megha-Tropiques
An Indo-French satellite mission launched in 2011 for studying:
- tropical atmosphere,
- water cycle,
- rainfall,
- clouds and
- climate processes.
SARAL
A joint India-France oceanographic satellite launched in 2013.
It has been used to study:
- sea-surface height,
- ocean circulation, and
- oceanographic processes.
TRISHNA
TRISHNA = Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-resolution Natural Resource Assessment
The future ISRO-CNES mission is designed to study:
- Earth’s surface temperature,
- water stress,
- evapotranspiration,
- urban heat islands,
- glaciers,
- coastal and inland waters.
Why Human Spaceflight Cooperation Matters
India is developing its human-spaceflight ecosystem through programmes such as Gaganyaan.
International cooperation can support areas such as:
- astronaut training,
- life-support systems,
- human-spaceflight medicine,
- radiation protection,
- mission operations and
- future activity in Low Earth Orbit.
ISRO itself identifies human-spaceflight cooperation as an important area of international engagement.
Strategic Dimension
Space is no longer only a scientific domain.
It increasingly affects:
- communication,
- navigation,
- military operations,
- climate monitoring,
- disaster management,
- maritime awareness and
- critical infrastructure.
India and France already have a broad strategic partnership, and space cooperation increasingly covers both civil and strategic dimensions.
Prelims Focus
- French space agency: CNES
- Megha-Tropiques: tropical atmosphere and climate
- SARAL: oceanography
- TRISHNA: thermal infrared Earth observation
- ISRO and CNES are long-standing partners
Mains Link
India-France cooperation shows how India’s space diplomacy is moving from traditional government-to-government satellite projects towards:
Human spaceflight + advanced technology + industry + strategic space cooperation

4. RBI Intervenes as Rupee Faces Pressure from High Oil Prices
Why in News?
On 4 September 2026, market participants told Reuters that the Reserve Bank of India sold U.S. dollars in the foreign-exchange market to support the rupee as higher global crude-oil prices put pressure on the currency.
This was a market intervention reported by traders rather than a formal RBI policy announcement.
Yet it gives us an excellent current-to-static link for Economy.
Why does rising crude oil weaken the rupee?
India imports a large share of the crude oil it consumes.
When international oil prices rise:
Higher oil prices → larger import bill → greater demand for dollars → pressure on rupee
Oil-importing companies need dollars to pay foreign suppliers.
If dollar demand rises sharply relative to supply, the domestic currency may depreciate.
How can RBI intervene?
The RBI maintains foreign-exchange reserves.
To moderate excessive rupee depreciation, it can:
Sell dollars → supply of dollars rises → pressure on rupee may ease
In the opposite situation, RBI may buy dollars to prevent excessive appreciation and build reserves.
Is India’s exchange rate fixed?
No.
India broadly follows a market-determined exchange-rate system with central-bank intervention to manage excessive volatility.
The RBI does not normally defend one permanently fixed rupee-dollar rate.
Prelims Trap
Foreign-exchange intervention is not the same as fixing an exchange rate.
Why does rupee depreciation matter?
A weaker rupee can make imports costlier.
This is particularly important for:
- crude oil,
- fertilisers,
- machinery,
- electronics and
- other imported inputs.
The chain can become:
Rupee depreciation → imports become costlier → input costs rise → inflationary pressure
But depreciation can also improve the rupee value of export earnings, although the overall effect depends on the structure of imports and exports.
Link with Foreign Exchange Reserves
India’s forex reserves broadly include:
- foreign currency assets,
- gold,
- Special Drawing Rights,
- Reserve Tranche Position with the IMF.
They serve several purposes:
- meeting external payment needs,
- building confidence,
- managing currency volatility,
- cushioning external shocks.
Prelims Focus
RBI may sell foreign currency to moderate sharp depreciation of the rupee.
But repeated intervention also uses foreign-exchange reserves, so it cannot permanently offset underlying economic pressures.
Mains Link
The episode highlights India’s vulnerability to external energy shocks.
A long-term solution therefore involves not merely currency intervention but also:
- energy diversification,
- higher domestic renewable capacity,
- reduced oil dependence,
- stronger exports and
- stable capital flows.

5. US Adds 162,000 Jobs in August; Unemployment Remains at 4.1%
Why in News?
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released its August 2026 Employment Situation report on 4 September 2026.
The report showed that:
- U.S. non-farm payroll employment increased by 162,000,
- unemployment remained at 4.1%, and
- average hourly earnings rose by 0.3% during the month.
Employment gains were particularly visible in food services and local-government education, while the information sector lost jobs.
This is an important international economic development because U.S. employment data strongly influence expectations about Federal Reserve monetary policy.
Why does US employment data matter to India?
A strong U.S. labour market can affect expectations about Federal Reserve interest rates.
Suppose markets expect U.S. interest rates to remain high or rise.
Then:
Higher US interest rates → US assets become relatively attractive → capital may move towards the US → dollar may strengthen
Emerging economies such as India can then face:
- pressure on their currencies,
- foreign portfolio outflows,
- higher external borrowing costs,
- financial-market volatility.
This is why an American jobs report can have consequences well beyond the United States.
What are Non-Farm Payrolls?
Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) measure the number of paid workers in the United States, excluding categories such as farm workers and certain other groups.
It is one of the most closely watched indicators of the health of the U.S. economy.
A strong employment report may indicate:
- healthy demand,
- strong household income,
- economic resilience.
But if inflation is already high, a very strong labour market can also make monetary easing more difficult.
Federal Reserve Link
The U.S. Federal Reserve has a dual mandate broadly centred on:
- maximum employment, and
- price stability.
Therefore both employment and inflation data matter when the Federal Reserve decides interest rates.
UPSC Economy Connection
US monetary policy can influence India through:
Fed policy → US bond yields → dollar → global capital flows → rupee → RBI policy environment
This transmission chain is far more important for Prelims and Mains than simply memorising the number of American jobs created.
Prelims Focus
Understand the concepts rather than the figures:
- Federal Reserve = U.S. central bank
- stronger US interest rates can attract global capital towards dollar assets
- stronger dollar may put pressure on emerging-market currencies
- foreign portfolio flows can respond quickly to global interest-rate expectations
Mains Link
The U.S. jobs report demonstrates how monetary policy in major economies creates spillover effects for emerging markets, reinforcing the need for adequate forex reserves, macroeconomic stability and resilient domestic financial markets.
